LGBTQ2 + National Monument:
five finalist concepts
The LGBTQ2 + National Monument project went one step further on Tuesday, as the five finalist concepts were unveiled by the LGBT Purge Fund and Canadian Heritage. The public is invited to respond to a survey on these five options in order to contribute to the choice of the final concept for this Monument which “will expose the experiences of generations of LGBTQ2 + people who have been persecuted, bullied, rejected and marginalized in Canada because of their attractions and how they identify, ”according to the LGBT Purge Fund.
The construction of this monument on Wellington Street - between the Portage Bridge and the current Library and Archives Canada building - is funded through funds that could not be returned to the deceased victims of the LGBT Purge within the Canadian Public Service,
after a class action lawsuit concluded in 2018.
“The LGBT purge refers to the time during which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Federal Public Service, because of their sexual orientation, their identity as a gender or their gender expression, have been systematically victims of discrimination, harassment and, in many cases, they have been fired on the basis of sanctioned policies and practices, ”explains Canadian Heritage in a press release.

The Lens (Durling Team)
COURTESY CANADIAN HERITAGELa Lentille (Team Durling): “Inviting everyone to 'come in', in the light of day, the pearly shape rises in delicate contrast to the parliamentary context. At night, it gives off an ephemeral feeling of another world. Inside, it binds us together, to share experiences, celebrate and commemorate, providing space for all who enter. ”

A Glass Circus (MASS Design Group Team)
COURTESY CANADIAN HERITAGEA Glass Circus (MASS Design Group Team): “Our vision combines the intimacy of a unique portal, as a place of passage - where we move from who we were, to who we are to who we can become. Enter the garden below where those who have undergone the purge are honored - their names inscribed in the glass. A curtain of water honors tears of sadness and joy. The mosaic flows towards a ramp which becomes a gathering space, a stage and a place of reflection, activism and celebration. ”

COURTESY CANADIAN HERITAGEOnCommon Ground Team: “This monument is meant to be felt, not observed. As he approaches, he presents visitors with a crushing concrete wall, representing the government's oppressive authority over its own people through the LGTB purge. A small portal gives access to the space of the monument. […] Exiting the portal provides relief: the white pine canopy houses Empreinte, a sculpture that embodies the simple truth that love remains love. ”

At the center of the monument is a soundscape developed by Rebecca Belmore and Noam Gonick that commemorates the oppression and humiliation suffered during the purge.

Team Wreford
COURTESY CANADIAN HERITAGETeam Wreford: “A thunderclap spreads inside an enormous column, creating the imprint of a cloud covered in mirror tiles: a shining space that becomes the monument. It rises as our community has stood up to say, “We demand change”. A stage extends from the base of the monument for events and performances, and its interior can accommodate intimate events. "
