Minister Proulx forces the cancellation of an anti-abortion event in Quebec City
Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx has demanded the cancellation of an event called "Rally of Faith, Fire, Freedom," which was scheduled to be held at the end of the month at the Quebec City Convention Centre. According to his office, the holding of the event created "great unease."
The event was scheduled from June 23 to July 2. The proponent, Kelowna, B.C.-based Harvest Ministries International, planned to accommodate 1,000 people per day.
The group's website promotes the event under the title Battle for Canada - Let's Prepare the Way and allows you to purchase tickets for $22. There is a tab that links to another site called Wall of Fire, where the values defended are listed.
Among them, a mobilization to end access to abortion. This has made the womb the most dangerous place for a child in Canada, it says. Political leaders who had been under the leadership of demonic influences were denounced and Canada's radical moral decline was denounced.
ADVERTISINGInformed of the event, Minister Proulx concluded that it was not welcome in a government institution. Our government is resolutely pro-choice. And it's a topic that has a broad consensus in Quebec, his office wrote to us in an email exchange.
The Convention Centre will comply with the requestThe Convention Centre, a Crown corporation, will cancel the event, the contract for which was signed in February. Freedom of expression is the rule. In this case, as a Crown corporation, we think it's our role to adhere to certain values that the government promotes," said Pierre-Michel Bouchard, CEO of the Convention Centre, in an interview.
According to him, there is no way to verify the content of the activities. He denies that he did not properly assess the scope of the event. We rent walls and we rent facilities. As it becomes clearer, we react. We don't spend our time in the theatres, he told us.
Cancellation will result in a loss of $50,000 to $75,000, in addition to the termination of subcontractor contracts. Mr. Bouchard could not say whether a penalty should also be paid. We're not there yet, but if there are consequences, we're going to take them," he added.
The CEO of the Convention Centre clarified that such cancellations have occurred twice in recent years. The first was because the client refused to translate documents into French, and the second was because it was about cannabis, which created discomfort.
ADVERTISINGFind another place? It is not out of the question that the event will still be held in Quebec City, in another institution that does not fall under the government. The Convention Centre is even willing to guide the developer to find a new location and avoid cancelling all the hotel rooms that had been reserved.
Obviously, the members of this organization have the right to rent a private venue to hold their event, added Minister Proulx's office.
