MONTRE: Mike Bloomberg: Elderly cancer patients should be denied treatment to cut costs
Billionaire and Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg said in a 2011 video that elderly cancer patients
should be denied treatment to reduce health care costs.
"All these costs continue to go up, no one wants to pay more money, and at the rate we're going, health care is going to bankrupt us,"
said Bloomberg, who was then the mayor of New York.
"We have to sit here and say what things we're going to do and what things we're not, nobody wants to do that. You know, if you show up with prostate cancer, you're 95, we should say, "Go ahead and enjoy it. Having a beautiful [inaudible]. Live a long life. There is no cure and there is nothing we can do.
If you're a young person, we have to do something about it," Bloomberg said.
"Society is not yet ready to do so," he added.

Bloomberg made the comments during a visit to a bereaved family whose brother had died after waiting 73 hours in the emergency room.
His presidential campaign did not return a request for comment.
The New York billionaire faced increased scrutiny of past statements as he continued to rise in Democratic primary polls.
Bloomberg's Democratic colleagues criticized him for his past aggressive defense of stop-and-frisk policies in New York,
prompting criticism from his Fellow Democrats.
Bloomberg was also criticized for a 2011 video saying that too many young black and Latino men "don't know how to behave in the workplace."
