A MEMOIR BY THE UNIT-T MOVEMENT: VOICE FOR CHRISTIAN VALUES (UVVC) SUBMITTED TO THE STUDY COMMITTEE ON COMPLIANCE WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ACT RESPECTING THE LAICITY OF THE STATE AND ON RELIGIOUS INFLUENCES
Unit-T: A Voice for Christian Values welcomes the government’s decision to establish an inquiry committee on the application of Quebec’s Act Respecting the Laicity of the State and the role of religious influence within public institutions.
However, Unit-T strongly believes that the committee’s mandate must go beyond examining the law’s general principles. It is crucial that the review also assess each of the law’s core values, particularly the freedom of conscience and religion, a right clearly recognized in Article 2 of the Act.
Furthermore, the committee must investigate the abuses and overreaches that have occurred since the law came into effect. Some decisions have led to discriminatory outcomes, which call into question the very spirit and fairness of the legislation.
