Family law reform
From now until June 28, 2019, the Québec government is inviting public input on the question of family law reform.
Québec, like many other jurisdictions, has seen a significant change in the lives of couples and families in recent decades.
The classic family model of a married couple with children is no longer the norm. However
the current legal rules do not reflect this evolution and no longer match present-day family models.
This is why the Québec government wants to modernize family law to adapt it to the situation of couples and families today.
The consultation will focus on the recommendations made by the advisory committee on family law with respect to parenthood, conjugal relationships, and relationships with a step-parent. The recommendations form the basis for the government's review of the situation.
The questions relating to filiation, are also covered by family law but will be dealt with at a later date.
