No to the ban on public prayer
Premier François Legault and Minister Jean-François Roberge recently raised the possibility of legislating to ban prayer in public places, saying that it would not be desirable to see people praying in streets, parks or other outdoor spaces. This proposal comes at a time when several incidents involving Muslim prayers in schools and public places have been publicized. However, this proposed measure risks unfairly penalizing thousands of peaceful and sincere believers and harming Quebec's spiritual heritage.

Considering:
- Quebec's Christian Heritage: Christian values, traditions, and symbols have shaped our society. Processions, nativity scenes and other public religious events are expressions of our history and identity. To suppress these practices is to destroy our cultural and spiritual roots.
- Secularism means a state led by secularists: Secularism does not mean the strict separation of Church and State, a fundamental mistake to be avoided. Rather, it aims to ensure harmonious collaboration between the spiritual and the temporal for the common good. By prohibiting public prayer, the state is not fulfilling its duty to allow religious expression in the public sphere.
- The real causes of incidents: Recent problems in some schools involve individual behaviors that can be addressed with existing laws and regulations. A blanket ban on public prayer would be a disproportionate and unjust response.
- The risk of spiritual uprooting: Banning public prayer contributes to the eradication of religious manifestations in the public space, further cutting Quebec off from its Christian roots, in favor of a strictly materialist and anti-Christian vision.
