The demonstration on the issue
of gender in schools
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, polyamorous and more (LGBTQP+) parents and activists crossed swords this week. Jean-Ernest Pierre, the host of the show 'Billet de retour', asked me to comment on the situation as an expert on gender.
The problem is not new, it is the result of the questioning of the place of parents in the school environment. In the 1990s, the question was who owns the school: parents, citizens or the state? Since it was believed that the school belonged to the citizens, it is normal to see activists wanting to influence the school curriculum and ideology.
This ideology stems from activism aimed at deconstructing heteronormativity, as promoted by the Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ). Since this concept is based on the presumption that heterosexuality is the norm, the FFQ sees heterosexuality as an oppressive social norm.
