The DPCP is hiring for the new Court specializing in domestic and sexual violence
Thirty-six Crown prosecutor positions have already been added to better support victims and other hirings are to come in the wake of the creation of the Court specializing in domestic and sexual violence, assures the Director of Criminal Prosecutions and (DPCP).
In its provincial pre-budget brief, which Le Soleil reported on Saturday, the Association of 700 criminal and penal prosecuting attorneys (APPCP) called for the addition of 75 prosecutorial positions to finally offer victims quality support, pleaded- she. Without this addition of human resources, the new Court specializing in domestic and sexual violence will only be an “empty shell”,
feared the president of the APPCP, Mr. Guillaume Michaud
At present, Crown prosecutors, particularly in matters of domestic violence, struggle to meet victims earlier than the morning of the trial, which affects the preparation of their testimony, estimates the APPCP.
Over the past year, the DPCP has received credits to add 120 employees, including 80 prosecutor positions, positions "which have a positive impact as they are filled", argues M e Audrey Roy -Cloutier, spokesperson for the DPCP.
Among the new Crown prosecutor positions, 36 positions will be distributed throughout the network in order to better support victims, especially for the first meetings. These new resources aim to ensure what the DPCP calls “vertical prosecution” in matters of domestic and sexual violence, i.e. that the same Crown prosecutor follows a file – and therefore the victim or victims
– from the beginning to the end of the process. judicial.
Administrative resources have also been allocated to support the work of prosecutors.
Ten other prosecutor positions will be added from 2023, assures the DPCP.
The DPCP recalls that it has been working for more than a year, with the other partners, on the establishment of the Court specializing in domestic and sexual violence, whose pilot projects will begin in May in five courthouses, including that of Quebec . Without quantifying them, the DPCP ensures that additional positions will soon be announced in direct connection with the Specialized Court.
In addition to supporting victims, the 120 new positions are intended to meet several other missions of the organization, argues the DPCP, in particular the fight against the sexual exploitation of minors on the Internet, the addition of court terms within of the itinerant court, appearances of arrested persons on weekends, the fight against firearm-related violence
and the fight against feminicides committed in the context of domestic violence.
The DPCP had 1,395 employees as of March 31, 2021.
