Bill 2: "A historic setback"
for the LGBTQ+ community
The organization Diversité 02, which represents the LGBTQ+ community in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, opposes the requirement of surgery for the change of sex on civil documents. According to the organization, this bill of the Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette contains "certain dangerous and discriminatory articles".
Diversité 02 and its members are firmly against the reform of family law.
The text of the bill provides that a person will only be able to change his sex marker on his birth certificate if he has medical treatments and surgical interventions involving a structural modification of his sexual organs."
This requirement was abolished from the Civil Code of Quebec in 2013 and no longer exists in any Canadian province.
A young trans woman from Dolbeau-Mistassini,Amy Fournier, joins her voice to that of trans people who also fear a major rollback of their rights if the Legault government goes ahead with this reform of family law.

According to Amy Fournier and Diversity 02, this change categorizes trans people and encourages violence.
It's a transphobic project, it scares me a little it's something that is not really correct in the sense that some trans people will not want surgery because it is a very big surgery and some are very comfortable with their original sex.»
In a press release sent on Sunday, the director general of Diversity 02, Daniel Gosselin said that this bill comes to sterilize all trans, non-binary and intersex people who would like to make a change in the sex designation, since hormone therapy and surgeries have irreversible effects on gametes and reproductive organs that reduce or prevent the birth of a child naturally.

He adds that according to a study by the National Transgender Discrimination Survey in 2011,
only a third of trans people will decide to do gender reassignment operations."
