Male violence against women
In a democracy the XXI th century, the recent outbreak of feminicide is revolting. How is so much barbarism possible in a society of law where equality between men and women has been on the agenda for so many years? It should be noted that at the start of the third millennium, the first fundamental right, that of living, is still not guaranteed to girls in many regions of the world. Selective abortion of female fetuses being practiced on a massive scale, there is a deficit of 100 million women in Asia. And 5,000 women a year are raped around the world.
In some countries, the raped girl is killed because she has tarnished the honor of the family and has become a damaged “commodity”. Pascal Picq, a recognized paleoanthropoloque, writes (in 2020) that the Homo sapiens species , ours, is the only one, among the great apes, where the male has set up a system of murder and mutilation of all kinds of his females. Biological factors do not explain such universally widespread violence, the author speaks of a cultural construct, a product of what is called evolution. A contemporary philosopher, Olivia Gazalé, delivered an essay on the myth of virility. Based as much on the male fear of failing true virility as on the fear of female power, this myth operates to the detriment of both sexes.
The Quebec government pays for advertisements to denounce male violence against women. Disturbing advertisements. In the one whose title is "Change of tone", a man, inside a closed space, inflicts a violent tone and in 12 seconds six different behaviors of control on his partner. The latter seems dumbfounded, without the means to do anything about it. This clip is shocking, because it alone sums up part of the history of male-female relations, a prototype of the appropriation of women by men, a violence in the face of which women, shaped since the dawn of time. as an object of man, remains powerless because it is dispossessed of its identity.
In response to this universal violence, what could or should women have done? The first psychological theories spoke of masochism as a typically feminine pathology. These theorists were busy dealing with these poor women who were missing something while ensuring that they submitted to the reality of the order of things, which order of things spoke of their proven biological and mental inferiority.
Different grids of analysis from social psychology and the radical psychology stream emerged half a century ago. Systemic scientists decode the phenomenon of female masochism as a normal reaction to a pathological and pathogenic situation in the environment. Social psychologists have decoded female attitudes and behaviors as a psychology specific to minority groups. A minority group is characterized by its limits of access to power and not by its numerical proportion. The members adopt the judgments of the majority group on them. “We find in these members an excessive dose of submission, feelings of guilt or other forms of inappropriate behavior.
Female masochism needs to be cured, just like toxic virility. However, the role of the state and its laws is paramount. Spain has taken the necessary steps to reduce murders and acts of violence against women by 50%. Locking up violent men rather than women has been introduced elsewhere. Locking up women and children while the criminal is still running gives the results we know.
